Homeschool 2.0

I enjoyed this article detailing the roots of homeschooling and current trends, including controversy over Cyber Charter schools.  These schools are receiving criticism from some public schools and some homeschoolers.  After reading the article, I came up with another reasons homeschoolers may not like the idea.  As they gain popularity, public school districts could try and argue that all children should be enrolled – where their progress can be monitored and their education could be “standardized”. This takes away from our freedom to educate our children using the curriculum we feel is best, be it Christian or secular. It may be a knee-jerk reaction, but I for one never underestimate the ability of the government to trample on my rights to secure it’s own advantage.

Homeschooling is not just about doing “school at home”.  It is (for some) the result of a philosophy that says time spent with family is time best spent.  It says that parents make the best decisions regarding how and what their children learn.  Everyone might not agree with that philsophy, but hey, welcome to America.  We allow diversity of thought here (at least for now.)
