The High Cost of Poverty:  Why the Poor Pay More

. . . First as a kid in a rural area, then hiking 2 miles across Camden for a $5 gallon of milk at Rite Aid. The thing that the author misses is that all of this is occurring in the heavily-subsidized economy of urban DC, where the government POURS money into helping people. Maybe we should be looking into alternate strategies. The other interesting point she makes is all the time wasted waiting for and riding public transportation. So maybe public transportation isn’t worth the investment or continued public support when it can’t sustain itself.  I really wish the government would admit the “War on Poverty” was a huge disaster and try some free-market principles instead of choking the poor with Socialism.
